She wondered why they never got together after all this time; things have a way of working themselves out. (Phone rings) “Hello/” it was Susan’s mom. Her parents were out of the country in Africa on safari. This was their lifetime dream fulfill. Susan figured they must have received the telegram about Cynthia. Susan’s mother was horrified to hear about Cynthia and more worried about their daughter’s emotional state. They knew how deeply Cynthia’s death would affect Susan... Susan, calmly said, “Mom, I am fine I have been working through the shock of it.” Suddenly she felt the weight of the situation push down on her heart. “It’s just hard to believe that she is gone mom.” Susan’s mother sensed her pain and insisted that they return to states immediately but Susan pleaded. “Stay where you are. Everyone knows how much this trip means to both of you.” Susan’s mother abruptly said, “Have you seen your sister Miki? We didn’t get a chance to see or talk to her before we left the country. You know how she is and I am worried about her. Susan, if she comes to the funeral, tell her I asked about. Let her know when we are expected to return.” Susan preferred not to give sister dear the message, but did not want to argue long distance. She didn’t appreciate the conversation turning toward Miki. Susan responded, “Yes mom, I will let her know that you guys made it to Africa and that you are doing fine. She'll be glad that you asked about her.” Susan reassured her mom that it is not necessary to come back to the states. The funeral was tomorrow and she promised to give her condolences and love to the family. Susan, emotions were becoming unbearable but she continued talking. “Mom I am so sorry that it took a week for you guys to get the telegram. Mrs. Little understands and tell daddy not to worry and I love you both. Hold her tears Mrs. Shannon remained stoic for her daughter … “We love you too, baby.” Susan kissed her mother through the receiver wishing it was her mother’s face and they exchanged some final words before hanging up. Susan began to cry herself to sleep remembering the last conversation that she and Cynthia had before she died. (To be continued)
